Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA)
What is the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)?
It is the Church’s ritual process for calling adults to a conversion of mind and heart.
We are called to be disciples of Jesus through the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation which are Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
For whom is the RCIA intended?
RCIA is primarily intended for those who are unbaptized or those who are in need of the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.
What does the whole initiation process involve?
It requires regular attendance at Mass, and other liturgical ceremonies. Key elements of the whole process include: evangelization, engagement with the parish community, catechesis, formation for mission, and the reception of the sacraments of initiation.
What do we mean by Evangelization?
We learn more about the Holy Scriptures, and how God reveals himself to us in our daily life. Also, we learn how to respond with a generous heart to God’s presence working within us and extend ourselves to be engaged with our parish family.
How do we become engaged with the parish community?
This journey of faith is not made alone. Our parish faith community supports the catechumens (unbaptized) and candidates (baptized) with their love and prayerful support.
How does formation for mission occur?
As a Christian, we are called to become a missionary because we are baptized in Christ and share in the mission of the church. Our vocation is to transform society by the values of the Gospel. We are called to be doers of the Word of God
The Sacraments of Initiation
The initiation process is the celebration of the sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation which are celebrated at the Easter Vigil. In the liturgy of the Easter Vigil, we commemorate the mystery of Christ’s rising from the dead.
How long is the RCIA process?
At our parish, the process begins with classes beginning in early September until the Easter Vigil which varies each year but usually is in April.
