GOSPEL REFLECTION for Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Then repay…to God what belongs to God”

Jesus in the Gospel this week shows us the strength of His wisdom against the Pharisees who planned to entrap Him with the politics of the world. If you are not familiar with the story, the Pharisees knew that if they can get Him denounce Caesar’s tax, he could be condemned as a radical on the spot, and if He were to submit, He could be viewed as committing idolatry against God. But Jesus sees into their malicious hearts and outsmarts them in their own game.

The Romans would build statues and engrave images of the Emperor on everything to remind all what belonged under Roman rule. Jesus reminds us by this scripture that above all earthly powers, the Image of God is written on all creation bearing His name and likeness. The Jews knew this truth and could no longer dispute this argument.

Today, where do we need to be reminded that we bear the image and likeness of God? When tempted to be bogged down by earthly powers, politics, daily stress, family worries, and worldly anxiety, where can we assent to the truth that God is really the One in control with supreme authority.

Whatever we can acknowledge belongs to God, family, friends, our jobs, peace, our daily bread, let us remember that what we give back to Him in His name, He returns it to us in love one-hundred-fold because we are His and He loves us.

Election Day is coming up, we may be experiencing anxiety and unrest. Take a deep breath and remember that God is in control. He is calling us to a higher love that is to uphold the dignity of those we may strongly disagree with. Let us be challenged to exercise our Christian principles and lead charity, clarity and compassion. Please consider signing a pledge promoted by the USCCB to faithful citizenship and civility during this election season.
